I have studied at IIT Kanpur and the University of California, Berkeley, and held postdoctoral positions at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad and the Bangalore Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute. My research interests are in representation theory and mathematical finance.
For about 20 years, I have been involved in efforts to make mathematics education at the school and college level more interesting and fulfilling through special topics, projects, and an appreciation of the myriad links of mathematics with other disciplines. This began during my time as a teacher at St. Stephen’s College and was my main focus during the years I spent with the Mathematical Sciences Foundation. I often serve as resident faculty for the Mathematical Training & Talent Search program sponsored by the National Board for Higher Mathematics.
At Shiv Nadar University, I have relished the opportunity to take part in designing undergraduate and graduate curricula from scratch, as well as in setting up a Department of Mathematics that truly believes in “unity in diversity”. I have served as Head of Department during 2013-22, and as Dean Undergraduate Studies during 2015-21.
Wildlife in and around SNU:
Apart from my regular teaching at SNU, I often participate as resident faculty in the Mathematical Training & Talent Search Programme, which is sponsored by NBHM. My Google Sites page has lecture notes and more information on my books.
I currently serve on the editorial boards of Resonance and Blackboard. I am also a member of the Programme Committee for the Annual Foundation Schools organised by the National Centre for Mathematics.
I have supervised two PhD theses:
- Samir Kumar Hazra (2021): Extensions of Lie superalgebras and their automorphisms.
- Charu Sharma (2021): Statistical modelling of high frequency multi-dimensional stock data with applications in risk management.
I have also supervised undergraduate and masters theses on assorted topics: Manisha Jain (Teaching Mathematics in Rural Schools), Sushil Singla (Logic), Himanshu Sharma (Lie Groups and Differential Equations), Aanchal Gupta (Cultures of Mathematics Education), Harsh Prasad (Analytic and Geometric Methods in Representation Theory), Praneet Srivastava (Kodaira Embedding Theorem), Priyanshu Ahuja (Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing), S Aravind (Characteristic Classes of Vector Bundles), Pranav Asrani (Equivariant Cohomology), Yash Jolly (Galois Categories).
